Malakula Island - Home of the Big and Small Nambas
Malakula Island - Home of the Big and Small Nambass

Malakula Island is home to two of the countries most famous tribes, the Big and Small numbas. These tribes have maintained their traditional cultures throughout the years and each villager plays an important role in the community. Both tribes still wear penis sheathes and the villages are governed by heredity Chief.

The two tribes were such fierce warriors and had a reputation which discouraged European traders and settlers from venturing to the island between 1700 and 1900 ad. This enabled the tribes to retain their cultural heritage, allowed the population to avoid the rampant diseases affecting the rest of the Pacific and kept the slaver traders away. As a result today’s visitors to the island will see a population who are very proud of their history and culture and with no desire for it to change in the future. The villagers are very friendly and happy that you take interest in their culture, environment and lifestyle.

On the small island of Wala on the East Coast, somewhat more sophisticated thatched bungalows and restaurant facilities are available. It is an excellent base for explorations into the interior of this beautiful island.

It is important you book your accommodation, transport and tours for Malakula Island in Port Villa before you arrive on the island. It is very hard to get around Malakula unless you have organized a tour, guide or your own transport. Public transport is almost non-existent
