Vanuatu consists of 83 islands with most of the country's population living in rural areas and outer islands. The larger towns of Port Villa and Luganville have populations in the tens of thousands. The three official languages in Vanuatu are English, French and Bislama, which is a pidgin language. There are however 113 distinctive languages nationwide making Vanuatu one of the most culturally diverse countries in the world.

In the northern areas positions of status are measured by how much you can give away in terms of pigs and mats. In the central regions the people follow a hereditary chief who reigns over the community. In the southern areas titles are bestowed on certain men also making them chiefs.
