Efate Island is Vanuatu’s main island and home to the capital of Port Vila. Located around a large natural harbor, Port Vila offers stunning views of Iririki and Ifira islands and is considered the gourmet capital of the pacific, bringing authentic dishes from many countries around the world.
Port Vila is unlike other capitals around the world. Port Vila is very clean, tidy and uncluttered with an amazing waterfront which is teeming with schools of colourful tropical fish and corals.
Efate Island has a rugged coastline, with rolling hills, fast flowing rivers, natural waterfalls and numerous lagoons and sheltered beaches. The inland areas of the island are covered in dense rainforest with few tracks and little access. There are many cultural and World War II historical sites around Efate Island and tours to most sites are available or can be arranged.
Hat, Pele, Moso, Nguna, Lelepa and Kakula islands are all located a short distance from Efate and proved ideal destinations for day or overnight trips. Nguna is an extinct volcano with magnificent rainforests, rare birds and animals, and thousands of insects. You can catch a boat to Nguna for the day to explore this natural wonderland.
