Tongatapu is the largest island in Tonga, and is where you will find the capital city – Nuku’alofa. There are also many surrounding islands and so together with Tongatapu they are called the Tongatapu Group. Tongatapu is the southern most group of islands in Tonga.
Tongatapu is located in the south of the Tongan islands and so experiences less humidity. About two thirds of the population of Tonga live on this island, and the majority of these are in Nuku’alofa.
There is so much to do in Tongatapu. It offers excellent swimming, surfing, diving, beautiful coral gardens, as well as secluded beaches and impressive blowholes. Eua is an island very close to Tongatapu and offers many adventurous activities such as caving, rock climbing, exploring the rainforests and whale watching.
Nuku’alofa’s culture has developed over time, moving away from the traditional Tongan way of life and becoming more westernized. To experience the true Tongan culture you need to venture out of the city and explore the many villages and communities.
There are many different ways to get around Tongatapu, including taxi, bus, rental car bicycle and walking. To travel between the islands is made by boat.
