Savaii is the largest and highest island in Samoa. The biggest settlement on the island is Salelologa on the south eastern side of the island. A car and passenger ferry runs between Savaii from Samoa’s main island, Upolu.
Savai'i is a volcanic island with live lava flows, waterfalls, white sandy beaches, plantations and dense jungle. One of Savai’is most treasured sites is the Pulemelei Stone Pyramid just west of Maota. The pyramid is the largest archaeological monument in all of Polynesia.
Another of Savai’is attractions is the Tafau Peninsula which is located to the south of Saleologa. The peninsula has a number of coastal walking tracks and a huge volcanic crater which you can access.
Savai’i is perfect for those looking to get away from the large crowds and to learn more about the traditional Samoan culture. Savai’i has many inexpensive accommodation options such as home stays, backpackers and family run beach resorts.
