Western and American Samoa
Western and American Samoa

Samoa is divided into two groups. Western Samoa, which is an independent country with its capital Apia, and American Samoa with its capital Pago Pago.

Western Samoa is known for its natural beauty. The islands in the Western Samoa group are covered with beautiful white sand beaches, steep volcanic mountains, dense jungle, waterfalls and tropical plantations.

Western Samoa consists of two main islands and seven smaller islands and atolls. Upulo and Savai’i are the biggest islands and home to most of the country's population. Upolu is the smaller island and is more developed with the country's capital and international airport. Savai’i on the other hand is more traditional and an excellent destination to get away from it all and to learn more about the Samoan culture.

American Samoa consists of seven islands, Tutuila being the largest and home to the country's capital and international airport. Tutila is a very steep volcanic island with many jungle-covered peaks, tropical beaches and national parks.

From Pago Pago you can fly out to the smaller islands of Ofu, Tau and Olosega. These islands are joined by a bridge and are great for a two or three day getaway from the mainland. The islands have very small populations of a few hundred and the Samoan culture is alive and well.
