Volcano House - Hawaii's Big Island - Hawaiian Islands Back to the Hawaii Big Island section
Exclusively located in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and nestled in an Ohia forest, historic Volcano House is constructed on the edge of Kilauea Crater, one of the most active volcanoes in the world. For generations, the volcanic activity, beautiful native forests and fresh mountain air of the volcano region have drawn residents and visitors from across the globe. As Volcano House is the best location from which to access the many wonders of this area whether it be hiking across a steaming crater, viewing flowing lava or lying on a black sand beach, since 1846 Volcano House has been THE place to stay.

This old style country lodge, the state of Hawaii's oldest continuously operated hotel and the only hotel in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is proud of its tradition of providing hospitality services with genuine Aloha. For over 125 years our lobby fireplace, symbolic of the warmth and Aloha that IS Volcano House, has burned bright, warming visitors as they reflected on the day’s adventure. Come for an experience that is unparalleled in the world. Your spot by the fire is waiting!

Steps away from the edge of the magnificent Kilauea Crater, Volcano House guest rooms offer a breathtaking view of the majestic Kilauea crater, Mauna Loa Mountain and the spectacular native forest of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The most popular rooms of the Volcano House are the crater view rooms in the Deluxe Wing and Main Building.

All of our 42 guest rooms are furnished with rare Koa wood furniture for a touch of simple elegance that is uniquely Hawaiian. Some of the rooms have our specially designed Hawaiian-quilted comforters that were made to help keep our guests warm during cool mountain night. The Hawaiian name of the quilt pattern is “Kanani O Ka Home”, which means “the beauty of the home”. A small heater is also thoughtfully provided in each room. The color scheme of the rooms is soft pink with a combination of gray and pink in the carpeting. All guest rooms are decorated with wood framed petroglyphs (an Ancient Hawaii Art form), photos of Volcano sceneries or old-fashion Hawaii paintings.

Volcano House offers the only public dining facility in the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Every year our facilities host thousands of tourists from all over the world. Sitting by the large picture windows in our restaurant or Snack Bar, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of Kilauea Caldera and its steaming fire pit, Halema’uma’u Crater while feasting our culinary delights.
