Lanai Island is also known as the Pineapple Island because of its past as an island wide pineapple plantation setup by the Dole family in 1922. Today the only town on the island is Lanai city with a population of about 3000 people. Enjoy some of the local food from the Blue Ginger or picnic under the pine trees and Dole Park.
There are many historical sites and locations around the island of interest to tourists. Puu Pehe or Sweetheart Rock is situated 150 feet offshore between Manele bay and Hulopoe bay and is one of the most notable landmarks. Keahikawelo or the ‘Garden of the Gods’ is another. It consists of boulders of all shapes, sizes and colours which are the result of thousands of years of erosion.
Lanai offers some great 4x4 wheel action. Hire a jeep or 4x4 and venture into the interior of the island where the moon like terrain of some of the back roads will provide and exciting challenge. The off road tracks at Munro follow the volcanic ridge of Lanaihale and offers spectacular views. Or join a tour and let a guide do the driving while you soak it all in.
