Hawaii’s Big Island is truly unique and magical and is bigger than all the other Hawaiian Islands put together. What makes the island special is that you will find 11 of the worlds 13 climatic zones within its shores. The result is white sandy tropical beaches, steep sea cliff, numerous jungle and forest types and even snow capped mountains.
Hilo is the capital city of the Big Island and it the gateway to the islands Volcanic National Park. Venture to the islands active volcano Klauea and watch red hot lava flow down to the sea where it is cooled and harden.
The Big Island is also home to some of Hawaii’s treasured ancient temples from the Polynesia culture. These include the birthplace of King Kamehameha and the landing spot of the first Europeans missionaries. Or visit Mookini Heiau (480AD) and the Puukohola National Historical Park.
On the Hamakua Coast you will find cascading streams and waterfalls amongst steep fertile valleys and mountains to explore. This is best done by rental car or with a tour group. For those looking for a little exercise you can hike through Waipio Valley, Valley of Kings, or the 420 foot grandeur of Akaka falls.
