The Hawaiian Islands are made up of 19 islands and atolls and numerous smaller islets and undersea seamounts. The group of islands takes its name from the biggest and southern-most island of Hawaii. There are eight main islands where most of the populations are based. Hawaii (the big island), Maui, Kaho’olawe, Lanai, Molokai, Oahu, Kauai and Ni’ihau.
The Hawaiian Islands are home to a large number of endemic species. The plant and animal life of the Hawaiian Islands developed in nearly complete isolation over about 70 million years. The Big Island is unique in that it has 11 of the worlds 13 climatic zone within its shores creating deep canyons, steep mountains and valleys, cascading waterfalls and high volume rivers, high sea cliff and tropical white sand beaches. There are even snow capped mountains.
