Moorea
is one of the most beautiful islands in the Society Islands, a favourite of many travelers, and the true essence of tropical island paradise.
Located 19 kilometres west of the island of Tahiti, Moorea (pronounced MOE-oh-ray-ah) is a triangular shaped island with majestic volcanic mountains surrounded by a breathtaking aqua lagoon, shielding the island from the deep blue Pacific Ocean. While Moorea has everything you would expect of a beautiful tropical island, its black and white sand beaches have been rated among the best in the world.
Moorea has something for everyone, from total relaxation and pampering to excitement and thrill seeking adventures. There are many activities you can get involved in to get closer to the culture and actually experience yourself. Learn the local dances, gather traditional foods and the unique ways to cook, and discover traditional art and crafts. As far as wildlife goes there are many beautiful birds around the island, and below the surface of the lagoon you will find marine life exhibiting great diversity in colour, shapes and sizes. Your time in Moorea will be full of leisure and exploration.
The island offers a wide range of accommodation to cater for all needs and budgets. From $12 a night for a bed at a backpackers/camping ground upwards to several hundred dollars a night for a room at an exclusive resort. Moorea has it all.
Getting to Moorea is all part of the adventure. Most people choose the simple option of a quick ferry ride from Tahiti, with several trips between the islands daily. However planes and helicopters are also available. Once on the island the usual modes of transport are available, such as rental cars, scooters, bikes, taxis and buses.
When choosing Moorea as your holiday destination, it is important you take into consideration the weather and seasons. The summer is the wet season and falls between the months of November and April. With the wet weather comes humidity, storms, and overcast days, and the temperature can be anywhere between 26-32 ºC. The winter or dry season (May – October) can be much more favourable to tourists. It is dryer and the temperatures milder, which can make sightseeing and activities more pleasurable. However this means that most tourists visit during the winter, so you might find the summer is better suited to you so you have the island more to yourself and less competition for accommodation etc. But no matter when you visit Moorea, you will not be disappointed.
