Vanua Levu is Fiji's second largest island and is located 64 kilometres north of Viti Levu. The island was formerly known as Sandalwood Island.
The islands two main centres are Savusavu and Labasa. Savusavu is located on the Northern peninsula of the island and is a very popular tourist destination due to its breathtaking diving and excellent yachting facilities. A must see feature for divers while on Vanua Levu is the world famous Rainbow Reef which stretches off the south coast of Savusavu. The diving at the reef is second to none.
Vanua Levu is the perfect destination when visiting Fiji if you are wanting to see the more traditional Fijian culture and lifestyle. The atmosphere on the island is very relaxed and laidback while at the same time offering some of Fiji's finest resorts. This makes the island the ideal place to get away from it all and relax.
Inland you will find some of Fiji's most lush, mountainous terrain and tropical rainforests ideal for exploring and action packed adventures. A popular activity is a 2 or 3 day kayaking excursions staying in local villages on the way. If you are not confident on the water you can always hike into the mountains with a local guide and enjoy some of Fiji's most unique and beautiful flora and fauna.
Getting around the island is not a problem. There is a local bus service which can take you in most directions from the centre of the main towns. Taxi services are also readily available as are 4WD rental vehicles. Most resorts can arrange transfers for your arrival or departure, or will pick you up from the airport. You will need to clarify this when booking your accommodation.
